Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The authors of the Austrian 'Bildungsstandards' (2005: 42) argue that language learning should go beyond concepts with a narrow linguistic orientation. Instead, language learning programmes should aim for "the critical and autonomous learner capable of assuming responsibility for himself/herself, others and society as a whole" (my translation). In a world increasingly shaped by globalisation processes, such a perspective involves new educational challenges which are often intercultural in dimension.
In this course particular attention will be drawn to the following issues:
" Identity construction and language learning,
" from 'Landeskunde' to (inter)cultural learning,
" integrating language and (inter)cultural learning,
" helping language teachers/students become (inter)cultural mediators,
" discussing different paradigms for cultural learning (e.g. inter- & transculturality),
" structuring experiential learning processes,
" introducing a philosophical concept of dialogue as a central objective for culture and language learning.

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation & regular attendance; development of a written project to be presented to the other students in class; written exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The aim of this course is to familiarize language students with learner-oriented and process based (inter)cultural learning approaches serving a dialogic agenda.

Examination topics

In its structure, the course is project based with a twin focus on theoretical concepts and concrete examples for classroom use. On the one hand, the projects introduced by the course tutor will be further developed in a joint effort. On the other hand, the students will be working on projects of their own choice.
