Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is, despite its unsexy title, one of the most important documents about language teaching for years to come. It forms the basis for teaching, learning, assessment, and thus underlies and accompanies all recent developments in classroom practice.
In this course we will have a close look at some chapters of the CEF as well as (different examples of) European Language Portfolios, and relate these to current issues in language teaching: CLT teaching, the 4 skills, the development of competences, the role of grammar, teacher / learner roles, learner autonomy, individual learner differences, critique of textbooks, communicative assessment etc.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation in class discussions based on background reading assignments, short presentations, teaching project

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The aim of this course is for students to develop an understanding how the CEF and the ELP can be integrated into classroom practice.
Students will a) familiarize themselves with the underlying principles of the CEF and the 3 parts of an ELP (esp. the new Austrian ELP 10+/15+); b) develop activities and materials to teach skills and competences using the ELP and try these out in classroom practice.
