Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In the context of our research project "Weltbühne Wien", this seminar will analyse the cross-cultural transfer, translation, and reception of Viennese plays in London, and London Plays in Vienna. The idea is to analyse how drama ¿travels', how it is transformed by translation, and how it is received in a different cultural context.

Assessment and permitted materials

class participation, oral presentation, essay (22-25 pages), and final written test.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students become acquainted with the theory of cultural transfer, with important translation and reception theories. They are prepared to do archive work.

Examination topics

Oral presentations of selected plays and topics, with subsequent discussion in class. A list of four early topics will be available from 1 July onward. Students volunteering for these early topics will be accepted automatically for this seminar.

Reading list

A reader with non-available texts and theory can be picked up in the central office during the summer holidays.
