Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
: in the workshop we will analyse several well-known American plays which were performed on major stages in Vienna. We will assess the major themes and the dramatic technique of these plays and the success or failure of their staging in Vienna (as it emerges in reviews, programme notes, etc.). What problems of cultural transfer were encountered in the target culture? Which aspects of the play were emphasised in the various productions? Which aspects were left out or re-interpreted, and why? What do these Viennese productions tell us not only about the famous American plays and their 'symbolic capital', but about the cultural situation in Austria at the time, about typical habits of perception and interpretation, and about the current political attitude to the United States?
