Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

: In this workshop we will analyse several short stories primarily of the twentieth century. After establishing the parameters of the genre and introducing the analytical tools we will focus on narrative strategies, character construction and thematic issues. Last but not least we will explore these texts as potential teaching material for schools.

Assessment and permitted materials

regular attendance, oral presentation, active participation in class discussions, written final test.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

introduce students to an important and popular genre of anglophone literature, alerting them to the challenge of the brevity of the form and considering the short stories as texts for the language classroom.

Examination topics

introduction to the theory of the short story and to narrative theory; students' presentations, class discussions.

Reading list

a reader will be provided at the beginning of term; it will include stories by Edgar Allan Poe, Joseph Conrad, Katherine Mansfield, William Boyd, Angus Wilson and Graham Swift.
