The course will be held in a MIXED format. Sessions 1-2 and 4-7 (08.03-15.03; 29.03.-03.05) will be held online, via BigBlueButton, during the regular class hours; Session 3 (22.03) will be held on site. Alternating on-site and online attendance (half the class for each mode) is planned for the remaining sessions. The final exams will be held on site during the first week of July.
Students who do not attend the first session without notifying the lecturer will be deregistered.

Aims, contents and method of the course

Content:
This course focuses on oral production, interaction and mediation skills for teachers of English. It develops discourse skills relevant to the educational domain, such as explaining concepts, giving instructions, checking understanding, initiating and moderating discussions, facilitating collaboration, encouraging conceptual talk, and critically evaluating contributions. The course also discusses characteristic features of spoken language, including classroom discourse, and provides ample opportunity for practice. Students will learn to make effective use of body language, intonation, voice, turn-taking devices and lexico-grammatical means to interact successfully in educational contexts.

Aims:

- to speak fluently and effectively in various forms of interaction and production

- to have expert knowledge of the characteristics of spoken language

- to have practical analytical skills, e.g. for monitoring and analyzing the speech of learners

- to facilitate access to knowledge and concepts through spoken language

Methods:

Communicative language practice based on the discussion of theoretical concepts, presentations, role plays

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment is based on one written/recorded reflection assignment, peer feedback tasks, a practice presentation (obligatory but not assessed), and a final oral exam, which involves oral production and oral interaction.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance (max. 2 absences)

Prerequisites for taking the exam: in-class presentation

Assessment criteria: lexico-grammatical resources and fluency, pronunciation and vocal impact, structure and content, genre-specific presentation skills, interaction management, interaction skills

1 (Sehr gut) 100-90%
2 (Gut) 89-80%
3 (Befriedigend) 79-70%
4 (Genügend) 69-60%
5 (Nicht genügend) 59-0%
