Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture course forms the first part of a one-year introductory program that aims at providing first-year students of English teacher education with an overview of the major areas of linguistic knowledge and their relevance for learning and teaching English as a foreign language. In the first semester, we study ways of describing and transcribing the sounds and sound system of English (phonetics/phonology) before turning to English words and their international architecture (morphology and word-formation). We will then investigate the meanings of words and sentences (semantics) and consider different approaches to grammar, studying how words combine to form phrases and sentences (syntax).

Assessment and permitted materials

written examination, multiple choice (part of the STEOP exam)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students will be familiar with the basic principles of phonetics, morphology, word-formation, semantics and syntax, and will be able to apply their knowledge to English texts. Students will be able to read English in phonemic transcription and they will be aware of the relevance of the newly acquired linguistic knowledge and skills for English language learning and teaching.

Examination topics

lecture and selected textbook chapters
ability to read IPA symbols (phonetic alphabet)
