Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This lecture course forms the first part of a one-year introductory program that aims at providing first-year students of English teacher education with an overview of the major areas of linguistic knowledge and their relevance for learning and teaching English as a foreign language. In the first semester, we study English words and their internal architecture (morphology and word-formation). We will then investigate the meanings of words and sentences (semantics) and consider different approaches to grammar, studying how words combine to form phrases and sentences (syntax). In general, we will discuss characteristic features of human language. Students will also learn some facts about the external history of English and mechanisms of language change.
