* Before the first session:

* First session (13th October): Input via Moodle and Collaborate (your loudspeakers need to work)
* Subsequent sessions: Moodle input with Collaborate back-up; some small group discussions in breakout rooms in Collaborate (your loudspeakers and mic need to work)
* For some participants, some class-time activities may require completion after class has officially ended (deadline: midnight on the same day).
* The plan is for the tour of the English and American Studies Library to take place on site (December/January); some (all?) tours could move online at short notice. The visit to another library may also move online at short notice (December/January).

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims: Students know fundamental concepts and strategies of academic work, with a special focus on literature and information research. They are familiar with the many information resources relating to English and American Studies and are able to make informed choices as to which to use when addressing academic problems. They know about the requirements of academic best practice. They are able to understand the relevance of information literacy for their future professional practices.
Contents: Concepts and strategies of academic work, with a special focus on literature and information research; information sources for English and American Studies; academic best practice; information literacy in academic and school environments
Methods: Online synchronous learning: teacher input, some inverted lecture sessions, individual and group online activities in Moodle, including Collaborate.

Assessment and permitted materials

Four learning diary entries, two library visits, individual and group online activities in moodle.
At present the two library visits are planned to take place on site; they could move online at short notice.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Online attendance (max. 1 absence) – weekly, pre-defined group and individual online activities (Moodle, Collaborate) count as attendance.

1) Four learning diary entries relating to sessions 1-3, 4-5, 6 and 7 (40% in all (6%, 9%, 11%, 14%), uploaded by 15.11., 20.12., 17.01. and 31.01. respectively. All four uploads are required even if you missed one of the sessions.)
2) "Tour" of the English and American Studies Library (15%)
3) "Visit" to and report on another library (up to 15%, answer questions about library visit by 31.01., 23.55)
Individual online homework (30%) must be done in addition to the three named parts. The three named parts must be positive as well as the overall score.
Grading scale: 1 (sehr gut) 100-90%; 2 (gut) 89-80%; 3 (befriedigend), 79-70%; 4 (genügend) 69-60%; 5 (nicht genügend) 59-0%.
