Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This proseminar gives an overview over different subcultures in the past and present. It explores 'classical' British subcultures (Ted, mod, punk, goth), more recent so-called post-subcultural trends revolving specifically around multi-ethnicity, gender and gender diversity as well as digital subcultures.
We will draw on cultural semiotics and film analysis to investigate (post-)subcultural artifacts (photographs, video clips, films) and discuss mass media responses as well as questions of commodification.
