Aims, contents and method of the course

Content:
ILSS 1 and ILSS 2 focus on integrated language skills, independent study skills, vocabulary development, and grammar of selected areas (in connection with text-based work). Students will work on text comprehension (reading, listening, summarizing, and synthesizing of information), analysis of the structure and development of descriptive, expository, and argumentative texts, and the production of well-organized and stylistically appropriate texts.

Aims:
- to develop writing skills in order to produce the coherent, cohesive, and focused texts required in an academic and professional environment
- to be able to express an opinion and support it with evidence
- to develop high-level reading skills in order to cope with a range of academic texts
- to encourage students to develop independent study habits
- to identify and address deficiencies in students' language competence
Students will be equipped to meet the language demands of their courses in literature and linguistics as well as in cultural and regional studies.

Methods:
Communicative language practice, developing skills and strategies for understanding and producing texts

Assessment and permitted materials

Homework/classwork: regular assignments (reading, writing, vocabulary, etc.); three graded argumentative essays; vocabulary log; presentations in groups.
Final reading test, final writing test (all tests without dictionaries).
There is a Common Final Test (CFT) at the end of ILSS 2.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance (max. 3 absences)

1. Homework, classwork (of which the above-mentioned assignments are minimum requirements) (50%)
2. Final reading test (20%)
3. Final writing test (30%)

All parts (1, 2, and 3) must be completed. Two out of the three parts must be positive. The pass grade is 60%.

Grading scale:

2 (Gut) 89-80%
3 (Befriedigend) 79-70%
4 (Genügend) 69-60%
5 (Nicht genügend) 59-0%

Aims, contents and method of the course

Content:
ILSS 1 and ILSS 2 focus on integrated language skills, independent study skills, vocabulary development, and grammar of selected areas (in connection with text-based work). Students will work on text comprehension (reading, listening, summarizing, and synthesizing of information), analysis of the structure and development of descriptive, expository, and argumentative texts, and the production of well-organized and stylistically appropriate texts.

Aims:
- to develop writing skills in order to produce the coherent, cohesive, and focused texts required in an academic and professional environment
- to be able to express an opinion and support it with evidence
- to develop high-level reading skills in order to cope with a range of academic texts
- to encourage students to develop independent study habits
- to identify and address deficiencies in students' language competence
Students will be equipped to meet the language demands of their courses in literature and linguistics as well as in cultural and regional studies.

Methods:
Communicative language practice, developing skills and strategies for understanding and producing texts

Assessment and permitted materials

Homework/classwork: regular assignments (reading, writing, vocabulary, etc.); three graded argumentative essays; vocabulary log; presentations in groups.
Final reading test, final writing test (all tests without dictionaries).
There is a Common Final Test (CFT) at the end of ILSS 2.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance (max. 3 absences)

1. Homework, classwork (of which the above-mentioned assignments are minimum requirements) (50%)
2. Final reading test (20%)
3. Final writing test (30%)

All parts (1, 2, and 3) must be completed. Two out of the three parts must be positive. The pass grade is 60%.

Grading scale:
1 (Sehr gut) 100-90%
2 (Gut) 89-80%
3 (Befriedigend) 79-70%
4 (Genügend) 69-60%
5 (Nicht genügend) 59-0%

Continuous assessment based on what is covered in the course; details will be given in class and on Moodle.

Reading list

Students are advised to invest in books which will assist their learning. Various dictionaries and handbooks necessary for English studies in general will be recommended by lecturers ("Toolkit"). Additional handouts will be provided on paper and on Moodle.
