Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Content:
In LIU 1 and LIU 2, students work with and analyse a wide range of text types, literary and non-literary. They develop an awareness of how texts are used (to inform, to explain, to persuade, to convince, to move to action, to delight, or any combination of these) and learn how to identify characteristic features of different text types and explain their effects. These insights will have a positive impact on students' own production of spoken and written texts. On the level of text analysis, the focus in LIU 1 is on non-literary texts such as (political) speeches, advertisements/commercials, review (books, films, restaurants, exhibitions), and news items. On the level of text production, students in LIU 1 write analytical essays.

Aims:
- to raise awareness of the importance of lexical, grammatical and stylistic choices in text
- to develop functional discourse competence and awareness of audience and purpose
- to develop increased awareness of register and appropriateness
- to deepen and refine insights into the language system and lexis

Methods:
Communicative language practice, analysis of spoken and written texts

Assessment and permitted materials

Class participation;
Two graded homework assignments (text analyses), assessment criteria: task fulfilment, text competence, linguistic range, linguistic accuracy;
One written test at the end of the semester (on site, text analysis, use of dictionaries permitted, no other aids).
Students are expected to continue their vocabulary log from ILSS.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance (max. 2 absences)

Part 1: Coursework 60% (= 2 assignments: 25% + 25%, vocabulary log: 10%)
Part 2: Final Test (on site, also for fully digital courses) 40%

Both parts must be completed and must be positive. Student work is graded according to the following criteria: task fulfilment, text competence, linguistic range, linguistic accuracy.

Grading scale:
1 (Sehr gut) 100-90%
2 (Gut) 89-80%
3 (Befriedigend) 79-70%
4 (Genügend) 69-60%
5 (Nicht genügend) 59-0%

Your work may be subjected to the plagiarism detection software Turnitin. The lecturer may arrange individual meetings to ask you questions about your submissions.
