Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
Assessment is based on two written homework assignments, a group project (incl. a proposal, an analytical essay, a text transformation, and a project presentation), class participation, independent student work, and a final test.The final test takes place on site. The use of dictionaries is permitted (no other aids).
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Attendance (max. 2 absences)The grade is made up as follows:
- Two written assignments and class participation: 30%
- Project presentation: 20% (Attendance at the presentation session is obligatory.)
- Written project report: 20%
- Final Test (on site): 30%All parts must be completed and three out of the four parts must be positive (including the final test). The pass grade is 60%.Grading scale:
1 (Sehr gut) 100-90%
2 (Gut) 89-80%
3 (Befriedigend) 79-70%
4 (Genügend) 69-60%
5 (Nicht genügend) 59-0%Your work may be subjected to the plagiarism detection software Turnitin. The lecturer may arrange individual meetings to ask you questions about your submissions.

This course equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary for coping with highly specialised texts from a specific professional domain. The focus is on independent genre analysis and adapting texts to make them suit different target audiences and purposes. The texts will be taken from the world of English for Science and Technology (EST).Aims:
- to develop the skills necessary to adapt to and acquire a wide range of new genres
- to understand the parameters that shape professional genres and how these parameters affect linguistic encoding and text structure
- to cope productively and receptively with highly specialised text types
- to acquire advanced strategies for mediating specialist texts, concepts, and communication
- ultimately, to communicate highly effectively in professional settingsMethods:
