Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course introduces students to the analysis of various phenomena in the grammar of English within the framework of Principles and Parameters Theory. The underlying theoretical assumptions of generative linguistics will be introduced in the first part of the course. In the second half of the course, these theoretical tools will be applied to the analysis of English language data. Where relevant, the grammar of standard English is compared to English dialects. In addition, cross-linguistic comparisons are made with German. The course culminates in students' own analysis of a particular data-set or topic in English grammar, which will be the basis for a final write-up (Proseminararbeit).
Assessment and permitted materials
Assessment is based on class participation; homework and classwork assignments; final write-up of participants' own research projects.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The goals of this course are:
i) to develop the research and analytical skills necessary for the study of linguistics, with a focus on theoretical syntax;
ii) to introduce participants to Generative Theory;
iii) to extend and deepen participants' knowledge of a range of phenomena in the grammar of English and how these are analysed in syntactic theory.
