Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The main focus of this course is sociolinguistic field work in the context of 'linguistic landscaping', or (English) language use in public spaces (e.g. on billboards or shop signs, in graffiti). The course first provides some orientation in this field of study, which is currently garnering much scholarly interest. It then culminates in students' own (mandatory) field work projects in which they will collect their own data on linguistic landscaping in Vienna, and which will be the basis for an oral presentation as well as the final write-up (Proseminararbeit).

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment is based on class participation (particularly as regards selected readings and discussions based on thereon); homework assignments; as well as field work, oral presentation, and final write-up of participants' own research projects.
