Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Phonology is the study of the sounds of language and their organization. This course will provide an introduction to the basic concepts of phonology and survey the foundations of phonological theory.
We will focus on practical problem solving in phonological analysis. This means that we will discuss and work on datasets from a range of different languages.

Assessment and permitted materials

There will be a number of quizzes and problem solving assignments (in-class and take-home) and one longer written assignment (term paper).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

By the end of this class you should:

-know how to formulate phonological rules

-know about important phonological processes, e.g., assimilation, lenition, voicing changes, and syllable structure alternations

-be able to apply this knowledge to datasets from a number of different languages

-be able to detect and discuss advantages and shortcomings of different phonological analyses

-have some knowledge of (at least two) different theoretical approaches to phonology
