Taking the area of vocabulary as an example this course provides students with more detailed insights into one area of linguistics and prepares them for their first small-scale research project.
After introducing basic lexical concepts we will explore the topic in more depth, taking a look at word formation, word meaning and word usage. Different aspects of word knowledge, such as spoken form, word associations or collocations, will be investigated in more detail. Students will actively engage with vocabulary tests and will get an introduction to the process of empirical research, data elicitation and basic statistics.AIMS:
In addition to learning about lexical research participants will learn how to find, reflect on and analyse existing literature on a specific research topic/question and will collect first experiences in planning, conducting and writing about a small-scale linguistic research project.METHODS:
This course combines lecturer input, group work, discussions, on and offline assignments, student presentations and hands-on experience with data.
