Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This lecture course offers a critical discussion of areas of linguistic theory and description. The focus will be on cognitive-functional approaches to grammar, including Usage-based Grammar, Cognitive Grammar, Construction Grammar, Systemic Functional Grammar, and Functional Discourse Grammar.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Lecture, student participation in session and independent study between sessions (readings).
Examination topics
The objective is to consolidate and extend students' knowledge of different approaches to linguistic description, and importantly, to encourage them to develop their own critical understanding of these, particularly as they relate to the study of English.
