Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course surveys approaches to transfer or cross-linguistic influence in multilingual language acquisition. We will review a range of (psycho)linguistic models of transfer and critically explore their conceptual foundations and empirical coverage. During the semester, students will build on this knowledge to develop an empirical research project which examines cross-linguistic influence in a specific subdomain of linguistics (syntax, phonetics/phonology, semantics).

Aims:
Students will:
• be acquainted with concepts in cross-linguistic influence in language acquisition and use;
• be able to reflect critically on these notions and empirical work carried out within these fields;
• be able to draw on theoretical and empirical research to develop syntheses;
• be able to develop and address research questions on cross-linguistic influence based on sound theoretical and empirical knowledge.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students are assessed on the basis of participation, paper proposal, presentation of research and written seminar/BA paper. Paper proposal, research presentation and seminar paper are based on the students’ own research project.
