Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar deals with the language of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, i.e. a specific Middle English text language. Each participant will be attributed one Tale, and will analyse a short passage in phonological, morphological and syntactic terms and produce a commented translation into Present Day English Prose. Additionally participants will be encouraged to elaborate, in their papers, on a specific problem they have encountered in their analyses.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students will be assessed on the basis of their participation in discussions, the oral presentation of their analyses, and a seminar-paper like portfolio consisting of phonological, morphological and syntactic analyses of Chaucerian English, a translation, and a brief discussion of a problem of their choice.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The objective of this course is to familiarize ourselves with Middle English and to develop our analytic skills by trying to cope with a language that is similar enough to Present Day English to be accessible but at the same time different enough for representing a challenge.

Examination topics

In an introductory phase, we shall familiarize ourselves with Middle English and practice analysing bits of text on various structural levels. During the rest of the seminar, student will report on their own analyses, on the problems they encounter and on the ways in which they intend to address them. The issues and proposals they bring up will be discussed by all participants.
