Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this seminar we will look at language change not as a phenomenon of the distant past but very much as a current and ongoing process. We will investigate recent change in Standard English in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar and relate them to their social context and general trends such as colloquialisation and Americanisation.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participants will be assessed on the basis of their oral presentations, written research papers, and in-class participation. All presentations take place during a seminar conference.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participants will

- become aware of general principles of language change such as grammaticalization and lexicalization

- work with and deepen their understanding of basic concepts of phonetics and lexico-grammar

- develop an understanding for the close link between linguistic forms and their social context

- conduct their own empirical investigation and gain insights into linguistic methodologies

Examination topics

The initial sessions will be used to introduce participants to the topic and help them develop their research questions. This introductory phase involves the discussion of articles and book chapters as well as practical work with computer corpora and other language data. The second phase of the course is reserved for individual project work. In the final phase participants will present their projects and findings in oral presentations and written research papers.
