Students will be contacted by Professor Meier via e-mail in March. At that time, detailed information about the course -- especially regarding the paper and in-class presentation -- will be provided. Students will choose a paper topic, begin working on their paper, and do some readings and a response essay before the on-site seminar begins. This enables students to have ample time to complete the final written paper by the end of the semester and prepare for the in-class presentation.

Aims, contents and method of the course

The central project of intercultural communication as a discipline has been to uncover barriers to effective communication and seek strategies to overcome these barriers. To this end, the class will explore the interface between language and culture (e.g., how cultural differences and worldviews effect communication practices and the pragmatic systems of languages). Nonverbal communication will also be addressed.

Seminar paper, oral presentation, attendance and intellectual engagement in class, reading quizzes, response essays

Note: Students registering for the class must ensure that they can attend all scheduled
class meetings and complete the assignments on time.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students will develop awareness, knowledge, and skills that will contribute to effective intercultural communication in a variety of contexts. Participants will become familiar with major concepts, principles, approaches, and their applications.

Mini-lectures, discussion, critical incidents, simulations, role-play, mini-dramas, group work, readings, response essays, presentations, individual research

Readings and a course packet of extra materials will be distributed electronically via scanned email attachments.
