Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This seminar offers an overview of empirical approaches to the investigation of such linguistic phenomena as polysemy, synonymy, collocation and metaphor. The reading and discussion of the existing studies will be followed by the hands-on experience of working with language corpora. The emphasis will be placed on the interaction between quantitative and qualitative data analysis.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students will be assessed on the basis of in-class participation (continuous assessment 40%) and a term paper (60%).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

This seminar offers and overview of studies on synonymy, polysemy and collocation patterns and will aquaint students with a number of qualitative and quantitative methods of analyzing them.

Examination topics

Reading, class discussions, solving in-class tasks, term paper (7000 words for MA and TEFL students, 11 000 for BA students).
