Aims, contents and method of the course

The main focus of this course is the empirical exploration of the status and role of the English language in what has come to be called the 'linguistic landscape' of Vienna (i.e., in public space). A plethora of empirical methods will be applied in hands-on investigation of the object of study, in view of establishing and tapping into relevant and useful data sources.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment is based on active class participation, particularly as regards selected readings and discussions based on thereon, assignments, and especially field work activity, connected to oral presentations.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The goals of this course are
i) to further develop the research and analytical skills necessary for the study of linguistics, with a particular focus on conducting sociolinguistic field work;
ii) to develop course participants' knowledge and insight in the topic area of linguistic landscaping and language use in the public space.

Examination topics

Discussions of regular set readings, interactive group work, lecture-format presentations, independent student research and presentations
