Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
In this course language is understood as a multimodal system of communication including both verbal and gestural expression. It allows discourse participants to dynamically create and express meanings. The focus of this seminar is on the interaction between metaphorical language and gesture. We will analyse video samples of verbal interaction and concentrate on how metaphor is expressed through language and gesture.
Assessment and permitted materials
The evaluation of the course is two-fold:1. Continuous assessment of the in-class tasks (case studies implementing the methods of cognitive analysis in discourse) (50%)2. Student's presentation (50%)
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students will be able to recognize and identify conceptual metaphors at the verbal and gestural level of language and discuss them within the theoretical frame of the grammar of gesture (Mueller and Cienki).
Examination topics
Readings, classroom discussions, in-class tasks, students' presentations.
