Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This is an interactive seminar-type course (mixed with small introductory lecturing blocks) for students interested in the research on second language acquisition/bilingualism/multilingualism investigated from a neuro- and psycholinguistic perspective. After short introductions to neurolinguistics, topics in brain and bilingualism, neuro-anatomical terminology and brain imaging technologies (e.g. EEG, fMRI, DTI, dichotic listening), we will discuss recent research papers - from the field of cognitive neuroscience of language - examining the neurobiological basis and cognitive-psychological factors contributing to ultimate attainment in second language acquisition. These papers will also serve as the starting point of the participants individual projects.
Assessment and permitted materials
mini-lectures, project presentations, all-class discussions of project presentations, short final written test, mini papers.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
This course aims at introducing the participants to the scientific subfield cognitive neuroscience of language processing (with main focus on second language processing the multilingual brain), neurolinguistics and at familiarizing with recent and ongoing research in the field as well as the tools used.
Examination topics
lectures, student presentations, group discussions.
Reading list
A list of required (as well as optional) readings will be provided online (Moodle) and at the beginning of the course.
