Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This is a survey course in the growing field of second language acquisition (SLA). Language acquisition (first language) and SLA seek to understand the linguistic, psychological and social processes that underlie the learning and use of first and second languages. This course will provide a foundation for students seeking to understand language learning processes as well as a starting point for those applied linguists interested in pursuing graduate studies in second language acquisition.
In this course we will briefly examine first language acquisition to understand how first languages develop in childhood and early adolescence. We will further explore SLA research in order to develop an understanding of how second languages are acquired. In addition, we will survey a number of current theories of second language acquisition, and examine their claims in light of research findings pertaining to: (a) second language acquisition by adults and children in general; (b) and specifically classroom second language acquisition.
