Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture course aims at helping students become competent readers. Providing participants with an analytical toolkit, the course enablea students to understand and apply some of the basic concepts of literary criticism.

This lecture course will
- provide an introduction to some basic issues of literary studies, such as text analysis, interpretation and literary theory;
- make students familiar with the terminology and practice of literary criticism;
- provide a survey of the major literary genres and the special methodological challenges relating to them.

Information will be provided through lectures (incl. ppp), material provided on moodle, Q&A-sessions, online self-tests.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written final exam (on site, multiple-choice format, 40 questions, 60 minutes; sample questions provided on moodle; Hilfsmittel/use of study aids not permitted)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Familiarity with the theoretical and methodological concepts and issues covered in class and with the set readings; ability to apply the theoretical knowledge aquired in the course of the semester to the readings
