Aims, contents and method of the course

This survey will outline the history of English literature and its historical and cultural contexts from the time of Chaucer (+1400) to the Civil War and the closure of the theatres (1642). Although developments in poetry and prose will be covered as well, the major focus will be on the evolution of drama with particular emphasis on the major Elizabethan/Jacobean dramatists (Marlowe, Shakespeare, Jonson).

Assessment and permitted materials

Written final test.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Knowledge of the literature, history and culture of Tudor and Stuart England, familiarity with Renaissance literary genres. B2+ level of English.
