Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Australia’s story telling nation has been deeply shaped by tales of frontier settlement, possession and dispossession. Selected readings and film material aim to confront the violent nature of colonial history by exposing the troubled relationships between the settler/invader community and Indigenous Australians, which have partly been misremembered and silenced. The focus of the course will be on the unraveling of Australia’s colonial past to highlight the problematic legacies of colonialism in both personal and national narration.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students will be assessed based on regular attendance, class participation, class presentations, four individual essays, and a final written exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The aim of this course is to introduce students to a diverse and interesting selection of some significant Australian writing and filmmaking, and to develop students' skills in reading and critically analysing cultural texts: novels, plays and movies.
