Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The American dream of success and wealth and the strong belief that every citizen possesses an inalienable right to its ‘rags to riches’ mantra has been deteriorating and withering for decades now. Broken, disillusioned, and destructive are more apt descriptions for the fictional characters who have fallen victim to the downfall of the American dream. The following course aims to familiarize students with a pervasive theme in American literature thereby offering attractive literary perspectives.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students will be assessed based on regular attendance, class participation, class presentations, four individual essays, and a final written exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The aim of this course is to introduce students to a diverse and interesting selection of some topical American writing, and to develop students' skills in reading and critically analysing cultural texts: novels, plays and short-stories.

Examination topics

Lecture, class discussion and student presentations.

Reading list

F.Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby (1925), Arthur Miller's All My Sons (1947), Edward Albee's The American Dream (1961), Tracy Letts' Bug (2006)
