Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
In this course we will deal with works by Nobel Prize-winning authors. We will read poems by W. B. Yeats, short stories by Nadine Gordimer, a play by Harold Pinter and a memoir/novel by J. M. Coetzee. In 1988, Naguib Mahfouz in his Nobel Prize Lecture said that language is “the real winner”. By reading some of the most memorable Nobel Prize Lectures we will ask ourselves basic questions like: What is literature? What is the difference between ‘Literature’ and writing? How do literary canons emerge? How do writers use the medium of language and genre to negotiate questions of identity, aesthetics, and politics?
Assessment and permitted materials
Class participation, written assignments, short oral presentation at mini-conference (15 min.), final test, end-term paper.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students will become familiar with basic skills required to analyse and interpret different literary genres (poems, short stories, novels and plays). They will also learn how to write academic papers.
