Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
Regular attendance (max. two absences), in-class and preparatory participation, expert group session, research proposal, proseminar paper.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
In-class and preparatory participation (active in-class participation, readings, Moodle tasks): 15%
Expert group session: 20%
Research proposal with annotated bibliography (700 words +/- 10%): 15%
Proseminar paper (3500 words +/- 10%): 50%Overall Score of 100%, pass-mark: 60%
In order to pass, students need to fulfil each individual requirement and complete tasks on time.
The plagiarism detection software Turnitin will be used on most written assignments (research proposal, proseminar paper).Scale:
1: 100-90%
2: 89-80%
3: 79-70%
4: 69-60%
5: 59-0%

Examination topics
Everything that has been covered in class (primary & secondary readings). Some of the tasks (expert group session, research proposal & proseminar paper) will require you to do additional research. There will be no written exam.

Over the course of this proseminar students will discuss and critically engage with the following key questions and concepts:- What is mental health? / What is mental illness? – In how far are these definitions fixed or arbitrarily constructed?
- How can the depiction of mental illness in popular culture influence the way we (mis)understand mental illness and treat those among us with mental health issues?
- How can mental health themed young adult literature act as a counternarrative to the stigmatization of mental illness in our society?
- In which ways do questions of race, gender, class and sexuality intersect with mental health and in how far is(n’t) this intersectionality represented in YAL?Within the context of its thematic focus, this proseminar is also designed to guide students along the process of academic writing. At the end of this course students will have learned how to carve out a research topic, formulate a thesis/research question, find & effectively utilize secondary literature, adhere to the rules of good scientific practice, and ultimately, how to structure and write a term paper.
