Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In her discussion of biography as a masculine historiographic practice, Jean Strouse argues that 'what we know of history has been shaped by the careers of famous men' ('Semiprivate Lives' 113). This class centres on auto/biographical writings of, and about, women artists from various historical epochs (Artemisa Gentileschi, Virginia Woolf, Sylvia Plath, Jackie Kay).
From literary memoirs to autobiography thinly disguised as fiction, from biographical novels to bio plays and poetry – we will look at a range of genres to critically investigate how authors negotiate the debatable borders of fact and fiction so as to articulate feminist and other concerns.

Students are expected to present a paper of 8-10 minutes at a mini-conference on 14 January (Sat, 10am-4pm). Participation in the mini-conference is obligatory!

There will be no classes on 31 Oct, 28 Nov, 16 & 23 January.
