Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will analyse a major theme in U.S. culture(s): the "American Dream". After an introductory discussion of the optimistic aspects of the term we will analyze four texts that query, in quite different ways, its basic premises. Hence the question mark in the proseminar title.
The texts are: Allen Ginsberg's powerful poem "Howl" (1955), Arthur Miller's play Death of a Salesman (1949), and two novels, F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby (1925) and Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream (1971).
Apart from the practice of critical techniques necessary for the production of an academic paper, we will also discuss aspects of the film versions of the last three texts.
