Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
After model analyses of a number of texts of all genres and from all periods of English literature we will will explore two texts which feature peculiar pedagogues as their protagonists: Simon Gray's play 'Quartermaine's Terms' and Kingsley Amis' 'Lucky Jim'. St. John Quartermaine, a teacher at a Cambridge school for teaching English to foreigners, and Jim Dixon, a junior lecturer in medieval history at a provincial university, are hardly suitable for their position and are facing severe problems in the private as well as professional domains. The texts explore the interaction of the protagonists with their colleagues and students in the respective educational institutions, in which they appear to be out of place.
