Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

"'Victorian', as we employ the term in our ordinary usage, is unique among historical labels, or very unusual, in the amount of meaning it can carry beyond the chronological," Michael Mason writes in The Making of Victorian Sexuality (1994). In this course, we will explore the various connotative meanings of the term 'Victorian'. We will read and discuss (excerpts from) classic texts from the Victorian era as well as Modernist reactions to the Victorians and postmodern re-engagements with the Victorian era. In addition, we will look at and critically engage with scholarly responses to these texts, focusing especially, though not exclusively, on the phenomenon of neo-Victorianism.

Assessment and permitted materials

active participation in in-class discussions; research assignments; oral presentation; final exam; written end-term paper (3500 words)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students will become acquainted with a range of Victorian and neo-Victorian texts as well as with scholarly articles dealing with relevant subjects. They will learn to implement different methodological approaches and to independently find relevant literature in libraries and online databases. In the end-term paper, they will have an opportunity to practise their academic writing skills along with demonstrating their insight into the topic of the seminar.
