This course traces the development of literature in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific from colonial times to the present day across the genres of novel, short story, drama, poetry and life writing. The course follows the emergent national identity of Australia and New Zealand as well as introduces students to Aboriginal, Maori and Pacific Island indigenous identities through innovations in literary form and function.

Aims, contents and method of the course
This survey course will trace the development of literature in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific from colonial times to the present day across the genres of novel, short story, drama, poetry and life writing. We cover literary periods of romanticism, modernism, experimental writing, postmodernism and the postcolonial. We also follow the development of national literatures through white cultural nationalism, women’s and indigenous voices, looking at themes, tropes, narrative and language.
Assessment and permitted materials
Attendance, class participation, in-class oral presentation, final research paper (4000 words)
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The students become acquainted with literary analysis across the genres and learn to apply appropriate analytical perspectives to texts from the Australasian region. This course fosters awareness of issues of national identity as well as offers an introduction to key writers and theoretical texts from the region. They improve their skills in academic writing and research methods.
Examination topics
Lectures, group & class discussions, oral presentations followed by feedback.
