Aims, contents and method of the course

This survey lecture will cover a number of classics from the first and the second half of the 20th century. (Conrad, Joyce, Woolf, Lawrence, Golding, Murdoch, Fowles, J.G. Farrell, Swift, McEwan, Barnes, Carter, Amis, Byatt, amongst others).

Assessment and permitted materials

Final written test.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students will become acquainted with the transition from the modern to the postmodern novel, with typical forms and conventions, and with selected narratological issues.

Examination topics

Lecture accompanied by discussions; Powerpoint presentation, Moodle platform.

Reading list

Students are expected to have read the following five works till the end of the semester: James Joyce, "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man"; Virginia Woolf, "To the Lighthouse"; Graham Swift, "Waterland"; Angela Carter, "Nights at the Circus"; A.S. Byatt, "Possession". All books will be available at the Campus bookstores.
