Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this lecture is to familiarise students with Virginia Woolf's different sets of writings - fictional, autobiographical, critical. Students will be introduced to Woolf's life, her involvement in the Bloomsbury group, the historical and cultural context in which she lived and wrote. We will explore Woolf's 'manifold modernism(s)': how she challenged 'eminent Victorians', their language, their 'vertical' modes of reading and writing; in addition, we will explore Woolf's feminist ideas, her modern conceptions of time, her vision of modern fiction - how new (often painful) ways of living required new, experimental ways of writing.
