Aims, contents and method of the course
This lecture course provides a historical and thematic overview of American culture from its colonial beginnings to contemporary concerns. Discussing paradigmatic texts of intellectual and literary history side by side with major developments in the visual arts, architecture and popular culture, we will explore American culture as a highly pluralized and paradigmatically modern culture that thrives on the intersecting and at times colliding forces of democratization, individualization and commodification.
Assessment and permitted materials
Final written exam.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The course provides a general overview of American cultural history.
Examination topics
Lectures supported by visual material; in-class discussions of voluntary readings.
