Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This seminar will deal with one of the most important subgenres of the contemporary South African trauma novel, the plaasroman.

Assessment and permitted materials

class participation, oral presentation, essay (22-25 pages), and final written test

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The students become acquainted with form, content, and style of contemporary South African plaasromans and their social and political context. They will gain insight into fictional microcosms that symbolically reflect the macrocosm of South African society.

Coetzee, In the Heart of the Country (1977); Lewis DeSoto, A Blade of Grass (2003); Lisa Fugard, Skinner's Drift (2005); Rachel Zadok, Gem Squash Tokoloshe (2005); Marlene van Niekerk, The Way of the Women (2008); Mark Behr, Kings of the Water (2009) (pb). Coetzee's In the Heart of the Country is out of print, but will be available before the beginning of the semester in copied form. All the other books will be available at the Campus bookshops.
