Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
In this seminar we will explore a wide variety of plays written/first performed between 1920 and 1939. Although widely neglected by literary criticism these dramatic texts provide fascinating perspectives on the development of English drama and theatre in the age of modernism. While some playwrights adapt and adopt traditional genres, such as the well-made problem play and the comedy of manners, others embrace more experimental forms and techniques. Thematically, they all focus on contemporary issues of the interwar period, amongst others on the social behaviour of the Lost Generation and the repercussions of the Great War as well as the dawning of the next war.
