Aims, contents and method of the course

This class will deal with short stories by British writers over the last 20 years. While our interest will be in the various generic features of the texts, we will also be looking at a variety of tools - methods of analysis and literary theories - to arrive at various readings of these texts.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- to become familiar with genre features of short stories
- to dip into the variety of forms and contents that the contemporary British short story can offer
- to use, refine and develop methods for the analysis of short stories
- to theorise about short stories, referring to a number of literary and cultural theories
- to develop a research question and pursue it with the help of analytical tools and academic writing
