Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Contents: This interactive course will provide future teachers of English at an Austrian AHS with a wide range of literary texts (poems, short stories and a play) which are considered to be valuable teaching materials in view of the 'pool of topics' of the 'New Matura' as stipulated by the Austrian ministry of education (BMBF). The range of texts discussed encompasses the three major genres (drama, poetry, fiction) from various cultural backgrounds and historical periods. The didactic potential, and, particularly, their relevance for the requirements of the 'New Matura' will be explored in some detail. Moreover, the literary works discussed will also be considered in view of the requirements of the 'Vorwissenschaftliche Arbeit' (VWA, pre-academic paper). The texts selected include sonnets by Shakespeare, 'The Herbal Bed' (1996), a play by Peter Whelan (dealing with gender roles, sexual harassment and religious fundamentalism as experienced and historically recorded by Shakespeare's daughter Susanna) and short stories by T.C. Boyle, Hanif Kureishi, Roddy Doyle and one example of "chick-lit".
Assessment and permitted materials
Requirements: Regular attendance obligatory; active participation in discussions; one presentation per participant (PPT, max. 20 mins per speaker); final test (essay of 700 words+ and a set of questions) to be written in class; the test requires in-depth knowledge of all the literary texts and course materials, and the ability to respond critically to the all the issues considered during the semester.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Aims: To familiarize future teachers of English at an Austrian AHS with the thematic tenets of the New Matura to alert students to the didactic potential of literature and to provide them with valuable teaching materials; to offer criteria for selecting literary works for the use in the AHS classroom, particularly in view of the requirements of the New Matura and the VWA; to advance students' cross-cultural learning, interpretative skills and their proficiency in oral and written English and to enhance their MIT-based presentation skills.
Examination topics
Methods: Interactive, computer-aided teaching with input-units by the teacher and students' presentations; student-centred plenum discussions; online communication with and between students will be facilitated by the use of the e-learning platform.
Reading list
Texts: Students should acquire a copy of Peter Whelan's play "The Herbal Bed"; a "Reader" containing the poems and short stories will be available by 6 March (details will be posted by e-mail).
