Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Contents: This interactive course will provide future teachers of English at an Austrian AHS with a wide range of literary texts (a novel, short stories and a few poems) which are considered to be valuable teaching materials in view of the "pool of topics" on which the "New Matura" exams are based. The range of texts discussed encompasses works of fiction from different eras and cultural backgrounds and a few poems by Australian Aboriginal writers. Thematically one set of texts will focus on "memories of the past" (e.g. short stories dealing with historical events in various parts and periods of the English-speaking world, such as the Irish Famine of the 19th c., the Irish "Troubles" of the late 20th c., or the clash between colonizers and the colonized in Australia) and another set of texts will focus on "visions of the future" - utopian and dystopian works of fiction, including T.C. Boyle's "After the Plague" (2001) and Aldous Huxley's novel "Brave New World" (1932) and some science fiction stories.- The didactic potential of these works and their relevance in view of the "pool of topics" and the requirements of the "New Matura" will be explored. Moreover, these literary works will also be considered in view of providing potential topics for a "Vorwissenschaftliche Arbeit" (VWA, pre-academic paper).

Assessment and permitted materials

Requirements: Regular attendance obligatory; active participation in classroom debates; one presentation per participant (PPT, max.20 mins per speaker); final test (essay of 700 words+ plus a set of questions) to be written in class, the test requires in-depth knowledge of all the course materials and literary works discussed, and the ability to respond critically to the issues addressed in class during the semester.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Aims: To familiarize future teachers of English at an Austrian AHS with the thematic tenets of the "New Matura"; to alert students to the didactic potential and educational value of literature and to provide them with valuable teaching materials; to offer criteria for selecting literary works for the use in the AHS classroom, particularly in view of the requirements of the "New Matura" and the VWA; to advance students' cross-cultural learning, knowledge of history and interpretative skills; to improve their proficiency in oral and written English and to enhance their MIT-based presentation skills.

Examination topics

Methods: Interactive, computer-aided teaching with initial input unit by the teacher, students' presentations and student-centred plenum discussions; online communication with and between students will be facilitated by the use of the e-learning platform.

Reading list

Texts: Students should acquire a copy of Huxley's novel "Brave New World"; a "Reader" containing the poems and short stories will be available early in March (details will be posted by e-mail).
