Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this interactive course, we will explore texts that focus on humans’ relationship with the natural world. Through a comparison of a number of genres, including novels, poems, and creative non-fiction, and authors from different backgrounds, this class seeks to investigate how writing is used by writers and/or activists to create change and seek (social and environmental) justice. We look at the innovative features of selected texts and analyze setting, character and place construction, motifs and themes and place the texts in the context of the current global environmental crisis and the social and cultural history of the respective authors. In addition, students will identify their own interests in this field and how literature can be used in an educational setting to create change.
Participants are introduced to a comparatively neglected yet highly significant and fascinating body of works.
