Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Nell Gwynne (1650-1687), King Charles II's legendary actress-mistress, is revered as "one of the most attractive characters in British history," credited with "lifting the spirits of a nation" (Roberts) after eleven years of Puritan austerity. This class centers on representations of Gwynne in various genres and epochs. A cultural icon even in her own day, the immensely popular and charismatic comedienne had plays written for and dedicated to her by the likes of Dryden and Behn, and her amorous pursuits became the subject of numerous poems and broadside ballads. She is mentioned in the works of Defoe, Joyce, and Twain - to name just a few - and has inspired countless biographies, films, and recently novels.
