Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Contents: This interactive course will familiarize future teachers of English with the latest information on the requirements of the ‘New Matura’ in Austria and with the guidelines for writing and supervising a ‘VWA’ (pre-academic paper). In particular the range of topics AHS students are expected to deal with at their final oral exams will be introduced and critically assessed in the context of the ‘Common European Framework of Reference for Languages’ (CEFR). On the basis of these instructions and guidelines the participants are expected to propose individually literary texts suitable for teaching in the AHS classroom in the given framework defined by the BMBF (Austrian Ministry of Education). Each participant is required to send in a proposal of a literary text by March 24, and to do a presentation on the selected literary work in class (either individually or as a member of a group) at the appointed date.

Assessment and permitted materials

Requirements: Regular attendance obligatory; active participation in classroom debates; one presentation per participant (PPT, max. 20 mins per speaker); final test (essay of 700 words+ plus a set of questions) to be written in class, the test requires in-depth knowledge of all the course materials and literary works discussed and the ability to respond critically to the issues addressed in class during the semester.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Aims: To familiarize future teachers of English at an Austrian AHS with the structure and requirements of the ‘New Matura’ (particularly the oral part) and to familiarize them with the guidelines for supervising a VWA (pre-academic paper); to alert students to the didactic potential and educational value of the study of literature; to offer criteria for selecting literary works for the use in the AHS classroom; to advance students' cross-cultural learning and ability to engage in academic discourse, to enhance their interpretative skills and their proficiency in oral and written English; to accomplish their MIT-based presentation skills.

Examination topics

Methods: Interactive, computer-aided teaching with introductory input unit by the teacher, students' presentations and student-centred plenum discussions; online communication with and between students will be facilitated by the use of the e-learning platform.
