Aims, contents and method of the course

This course aims to introduce students to one of the most significant, provocative and versatile writers of his generation: British novelist, screen-writer, playwright and essayist Hanif Kureishi (b. 1954). Coming to prominence in the mid-1980s Kureishi's vivid evocations of marginalised subjects have redefined images of British identity and new ways of being British.

Week 1 Introduction to Hanif Kureishi:
Please read Kureishi's ‘The Rainbow Sign’ on moodle before the class.

Week 2 "The Buddha of Suburbia" (1990):
Please read Sandhu, 'Pop goes the centre' on moodle before the class.

Week 3 "The Buddha of Suburbia" (1990)

Week 4 ‘My Son the Fanatic’ short story and ‘Bradford’:
Please read Kureishi's short story MSF and his essay 'Bradford' - both will be on moodle before the class.

Week 5 "My Son the Fanatic" Screenplay:
Please buy/borrow and read the screenplay before the class. Please watch the screenplay too.

* Hanif Kureishi, "My Son the Fanatic" (BFI Film 1997)
Please make sure you watch the film "My Son the Fanatic" before Week 4.
(All books available at the Facultas am Campus bookstore.)

* The short story ‘My Son the Fanatic’ and essays ‘Bradford’ and ‘Rainbow Sign’ will be uploaded on moodle.
